Charles E. Mathews, age 91, of Linn, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at Stonebridge Westphalia Hills.
Charles was born on October 18, 1934, in Crook, a son to the late Clarence and Anna (Baclesse) Mathews.
He was a 1949 graduate of Flat Rock School near Crook and later was a 1953 graduate of Linn High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959.
On August 5, 1967, he was united in marriage to Alvina Jaegers at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Loose Creek. Alvina survives at their home.
He was employed for almost 40 years for Missouri Department of Transportation as a core driller operator until his retirement in 1998.
Charles enjoying gardening, bird hunting for either quail or pheasant, fishing, camping, and shooting black powder rifles. He was the 1983 Missouri Black powder Buffalo shoot state champion. In 1966, he started the Old Farm Shooters Gun Club. He served as the board president of Perrey-St. Isidore Cemetery Association. Past member of the Osage Trail Riders Club, and the Capitol City Motorcycle club. His greatest enjoyment was spending time with his family and friends.
In addition to his wife of 58 years, Charles is survived by two sons, Chris (Becky) Mathews of Jefferson City and Kenny Mathews of Loose Creek; two grandchildren, Logan Mathews of Columbia and Lauren Mathews of Columbia; one sister, Ruth Salvas of Salmon, Idaho; along with several nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant sisters, Verda and Roena Mathews, one sister, Verla (Tom) Wolfe, a niece, Dorothy Brown, a brother-in-law, Ralph Salvas, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harry (Leona) Jaegers and Harold (Nancy) Jaegers; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, August and Bernardine Jaegers.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Morton Chapel in Linn.
Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Morton Chapel with Deacon Tony Valdes officiating. Interment with Full Military Honors will be held in Perrey- St. Isidore Cemetery near Linn.
In Lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to the Perrey-St. Isidore Cemetery.
