Johnny R. Shields, age 78, of Lonedell, Mo., passed away Friday, September 4, 2026, at Mercy Hospital in Washington, Mo.
He was born on July 28, 1948, in St. Charles, Mo., a son of Randall D. and Goldie F. (Garrison) Shields. He was married on August 21, 1965, in St. Charles, to Virginia Dale Helmig who survives at the home.
Johnny took great pride in his work and dedicated many years to learning and mastering his trade. He began his plumbing career with A1 Plumbing, where he learned the trade and developed the skills that would serve him throughout his career. He later ventured out on his own, putting his experience and strong work ethic to use while continuing to grow as a plumber.
Through years of hard work, determination, and dedication, Johnny ultimately earned the distinction of becoming a Master Plumber, an accomplishment he was especially proud of. He went on to work with Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 562 and later with AA Quick, where he continued to be known for his knowledge, dependability, and commitment to doing the job right.
Johnny had many interests throughout his life, but music was always especially important to him. He was very musical himself, playing the rhythm and lead guitar and even singing at weddings. He loved listening to old blues, classic rock, and old country music, and Elvis was his all-time favorite.
When he wasn’t enjoying music, Johnny could often be found hunting or fishing. He also loved playing games and especially treasured sitting down for a game of checkers with his grandchildren. He enjoyed blackjack and poker as well and was always ready for a good game and a little friendly competition. Johnny also had a soft spot for animals, especially his cat, Felix, and enjoyed raising dogs over the years.
More than any hobby or interest, Johnny’s family meant everything to him. He loved them deeply and would do anything for them. That same caring nature extended beyond his family, as Johnny was the kind of person who would lend a hand to anyone who needed it. He was loyal, dependable, and always willing to be there for the people in his life.
Johnny was a smart man with a dynamic personality and a genuine love for enjoying life. One of his favorite sayings was, “We are not here for a long time, just here for a good time.” It was a saying that fit Johnny well. He understood that life was meant to be lived and enjoyed, and he filled his home with good music, laughter, family, friends, and the simple moments that mattered most.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Virginia; children, Randall Shields (Deborah) of Mt. Sterling, Mo., Roger Shields (Cherie) of Wentzville, Mo., Kathy Dukes (Michael) of Moncks Corner, Sc., and Thomas Shields, of Lonedell, Mo.; and siblings, Paul Shields of Jefferson City, Mo., and Norma Jean Null, of Overland, Mo.; grandchildren, Alex (Jessi), Nathan and Garrett; and great-grandchildren, Eleanor, and Bennett.
Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, Randall and Goldie Shields; and siblings, Lula Belle Matney, Helen Jenkins, and Eula Faye Darr.
